Chicago White Sox: Baseball's Black Hole

The White Sox are one of the worst organization in the history of baseball. I got stats that back that up. They have made the playoffs just 9 times in the last 117 years. The White Sox miss the playoffs 92 percent of the time. Every player that goes here disappears in Major League Baseball circles. I know they got 3 World Series titles, but it doesn't make them a great organization just a organization that gets lucky. Even when they had a great team in 2005 that Won a World Series they still manage to screw it up.

           1919-1959

They went 40 years between playoffs appearance in this stretch.  The White Sox averaged just 70 wins a year. This franchise did nothing of note from 1919 until 1959. They went into the Abyss in baseball and only climb out of it for 1 year. Even when they made the World Series in 1959 they still managed to screw it up the next year by trading big contributor Barry Latman to the Indians for a declining Herb Score. Barry Latman went on to be a 2-time All-Star for the Indians.

           Bill Veeck Years [1960-1981]

Bill Veeck was one of the worst owners in baseball history and he owned the White Sox for 21 years. In 1968, they traded 2 good players in Al Weis and Tommie Agee for declined Tommy Davis and 3 garbage players. Bill Veeck even did a Disco Demolition Night on April 10 of 1979. What could go wrong, right!? The fans stormed the field and the White Sox had to forfeit the 2nd game of the Double-Header.

The Ken "The Hawk" Harrelson Debacle [1986]

Ken "The Hawk"Harrelson is a great play-by-play man for the White Sox and is a Hall of Famer, but not as a General Manager. As a General Manager he was terrible and he was the first one to admit that in his documentary. He fired an Hall of Fame General Manager in Tony La Russa and traded Bobby Bonilla who became a 6-time all-star and a pretty good player. He wasn't fit to be General Manager, but when your a poorly run franchise you make hires like Ken "The Hawk" Harrelson as your General Manager.

              The Sammy Sosa trade [1992]

The White Sox traded prospect Sammy Sosa for Ken Patterson and George Bell. That trade came back to bite the White Sox like it usually does. Sammy Sosa went on to hit over 600 homers and became an icon while Ken Patterson and George Bell were past their prime. Safe to say that the White Sox fans hate this trade.

Screwing up a rock-solid World Series team in 2005

The White Sox finally won the World Series in 2005 by sweeping the Astros in 4 games. They had a great team in Paul Konerko, Carl Everett, Jermaine Dye, Joe Crede, A.J Pierzynski, Tadahito Iguchi, Scott Podsendnik, Aaron Rowand, Frank Thomas, Juan Uribe, Mark Buehrle, Jose Contreras, Freddy Garcia, Jon Garland, Neal Cotts, Dustin Hermanson and Bobby Jenks. It should had been easy to keep this team together, but not the White Sox. They immediately tear it down. They traded Aaron Rowand and prospect Gio Gonzalez for Jim Thome. While Jim Thome had a good career for the White Sox, they got rid of one of their starting pitchers in Aaron Rowand. Then they traded prospect Javier Lopez for David Riske. They had a close in waiting in Bobby Jenks and David Riske played for 3 months while Javier Lopez became a good relief pitcher which won 3 World Series titles.

In 2007, they continue to ruin the 2005 team by trading Neal Cotts to the Cubs for David Aardsma. David Aardsam played one year for the White Sox, Then they traded Freddie Garcia for Gavin Floyd and prospect Gio Gonzalez again. Gavin Floyd was awful for the White Sox and the fan base couldn't wait for him to leave. Not to be outdone they traded Brandon McCarthy to the Rangers for John Danks and Nick Massett. John Danks never lived up to the billing and Nick Massett was there for one year while Brandon McCarthy has been a solid starting pitcher in the majors.

In 2008, they traded Jon Garland to the Angels for Orlando Cabrera. Jon Garland went on to still be a reliable starter in the majors while Orlando Cabrera left after one year. Then they traded prospect Gio Gonzalez to the A's for Nick Swisher and what do you know Nick Swisher was only with the White Sox for one year. Gio Gonzalez went on to become a solid starter for both the A's and later the Nationals. The reason Nick Swisher only played for the White Sox for one year because they traded him for 3 crappy prospects including Wilson Betemit. The White Sox gave up on Nick Swisher after one year.  They also overpaid for Adam Dunn in 2011 and gave up highly toted prospects in Frankie Montas [now a Athletic], Micah Johnson and Trayce Thompson [now a Athletic] in a 3-team trade that also saw Jose Peraza and Scott Schebler to the Reds.

Overview: Going to the White Sox is like getting sucked into the black hole. You disappear. They are currently are one of the worst teams in baseball and there is no hope in sight. Chris Sale in 2017 got traded to the Red Sox for prospects. Chris Sale is the Red Sox ace starter. How long will it be before their one bright star Jose Abreu gets traded for prospects? I'm not even get into the Jake Peavy trade because this is too long already. The White Sox are one of the worst franchise in baseball and are baseball's black hole.
